Greylisting
Greylisting ist eine Methode um unerwünschte E-Mails, also SPAM, zu unterbinden oder zumindest zu reduzieren.
Greylisting macht sich die Eigenheiten des SMTP-Protokolls zu nutze, wird an einen Mailserver, welcher Greylisting betreibt, eine E-Mail zugestellt, prüft dieser ob er schon einmal, in z.B. den letzten 24 Stunden, eine E-Mail mit diesem Absender und von diesem sendenden Mailserver erhalten hat. Ist dies nicht der Fall gibt er eine temporäre Fehlermeldung aus. Ein Mailserver der diese Fehlermeldung erhält wird auch weiterhin versuchen diese Mail zuzustellen. Nach einem Zeitraum von einigen wenigen Minuten nimmt der empfangende Mailserver diese Mail an und merkt sich Absender und sendenden Mailserver. Mails die zukünftig von diesem Absender und Mailserver kommen, werden sofort angenommen.
SPAM Versender versuchen so viele Mails wie möglich loszuwerden und nutzen dafür häufig Programme, die eine Mail nach einem temporären Fehler nicht erneut zustellen. Dadurch wird SPAM schon vor Annahme abgeblockt.
Vorteile
SPAM wird merklich reduziert ohne das E-Mails falsch aussortiert oder gelöscht werden, so dass tatsächlich nur solche Mails geblockt werden, die auch geblockt werden sollen.
Nachteile
Einige Mailserver halten sich leider nicht an die Standarts für SMTP und versuchen daher auch nicht die Mail erneut zu senden. Der Absender erhält in solchen Fällen eine Fehlermeldung. Der Fehler liegt hierbei aber eindeutig bei dem Mailserver der nicht versucht die Mail erneut zu versenden.
Ausserdem führt der Einsatz von Greylisting, zu einer Verzögerung von einigen Minuten, sofern Absender und Mailserver noch nicht bekannt sind.
